Our Story
India’s embroiderers, known by the Urdu word “karigar,” which means “artisan,” are among the best in the world. Formalized during Mughal rule, which spanned two centuries from the mid-1500s, karigars have passed their art form across generations. Their younger generation, however, is losing interest in a job that requires scrupulous discipline, sincere dedication and decades of training to master some of the fine stitches that are ubiquitous in haute couture.
As a result, fine hand embroidery is getting noticeably rarer and intricate embroidery techniques are slowly fading away with the passing of senior Indian karigars who have mastered them over decades.
It may seem exaggerated, but we feel that commissioning an ANNBIIR hand embroidered wall installation today is like commissioning an Andy Warhol painting in the 1950s; with the gradual demise of skilled hands it may not be possible to do so in another 30 years
Every Annbiir wall installation is designed and handmade by Mode De Vie, a globally recognized embroidery house whose clientele comprises world renowned couturiers like Saint Laurent, Elie Saab, Mohammed Ashi, Bruce Oldfield, Ralph Rucci, Naeem Khan, Rami Kadi.
When you commission an ANNBIIR hand embroidered wall installation you can be certain that you will receive precise workmanship from highly skilled, well compensated embroiderers, tapped from all over India and the best materials sourced from all over the world from companies like Swarovski, Preciosa and Miyuki.
Every embroidery project we work on is custom made. The artwork, the techniques, the materials, the colors and the range of possibilities for what you can create with us is limitless.
Clients we work with become life-long friends and evangelists for the preservation of hand embroidery.
